How to Focus Your Revision for Core Practicals – GCSE Science 2026

With the GCSE science exams coming up fast, a lot of students focus heavily on content revision (equations, definitions, flashcards, etc.) and forget one of the most important exam areas: core practicals. If you revise them properly, they can give you a big boost in marks across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. 📈

This blog explains why core practicals matter and how to revise them smartly, plus a simple way to structure your answers differently for each science.


Why Core Practicals Are So Important

Core practicals are not just something you did in class — they are tested directly in the exam in several ways:

  • Planning questions

  • “Explain the method” questions

  • Questions about variables

  • Calculations based on results

  • Evaluating methods (improvements, errors, reliability)

That means one practical can easily appear in multiple questions worth 6–10 marks total. So instead of trying to memorise everything, focusing on core practicals is one of the smartest revision strategies you can use. 🎯


Step 1: Don’t Revise Them Like Normal Notes

Most students revise practicals the wrong way. They try to memorise the full method word-for-word.

Instead, focus on these 4 things:

  1. What the practical is trying to find out

  2. What you change (independent variable)

  3. What you measure (dependent variable)

  4. How you make it fair (control variables)

Once you know those, you can answer almost any practical question.


Step 2: How Planning Questions Differ in Each Science

This is where top-grade students really stand out. Planning questions are different in Biology, Chemistry and Physics — and if you answer them all the same way, you lose easy marks.


Biology – Focus Mainly on Variables 🌱

In Biology practical questions, the examiner mainly wants to see that you understand how to design a fair test.

When revising Biology core practicals, always ask yourself:

  • What is the independent variable? (What are we changing?)

  • What is the dependent variable? (What are we measuring?)

  • What must stay the same to make it fair?

Example:

If the practical is about the effect of light intensity on photosynthesis:

  • Independent variable → distance from the lamp

  • Dependent variable → number of oxygen bubbles

  • Control variables → temperature, same plant, same water volume

If you can identify those three things quickly in the exam, you’re already scoring most of the marks. ✔️


Chemistry – Focus Mainly on the Procedure 🧪

In Chemistry, planning questions are less about variables and more about the exact steps.

Examiners want to know:

  • What equipment you would use

  • What order you would do the steps in

  • How you would make the results accurate

So when revising Chemistry practicals, don’t just read them — rewrite the method in bullet points like this:

  1. Measure 25 cm³ of acid using a pipette

  2. Add indicator

  3. Add alkali slowly from a burette

  4. Record the volume when the colour changes

If you practise rewriting the steps like this, you’ll find planning questions much easier in the exam. 💡


Physics – Equipment + How to Use It + Calculations ⚡

Physics practical questions are usually about:

  • What equipment is used

  • How to use it properly

  • What calculation you need to do

So instead of memorising long descriptions, revise like this:

Ask yourself three quick questions:

  1. What equipment do I need?

  2. How do I actually use it?

  3. What equation will I need at the end?

Example:

If the practical is about resistance:

  • Equipment → power supply, ammeter, voltmeter, resistor

  • How to use → connect ammeter in series, voltmeter in parallel

  • Calculation → resistance = voltage ÷ current

If you remember those three things, you’ll find Physics practical questions much more manageable. 🔋


Step 3: The Best Way to Revise Core Practicals Quickly

Try this 5-minute method for each practical:

Minute 1: Write what the practical is testing

Minute 2: Write the independent variable

Minute 3: Write the dependent variable

Minute 4: Write the key equipment

Minute 5: Write one improvement to make it more accurate

Do that for a few practicals each day and you’ll cover everything without feeling overwhelmed. 😊


Final Advice Before the Exams

If you’re short on time, focus on:

  • Required practicals first

  • Variables in Biology

  • Methods in Chemistry

  • Equipment and calculations in Physics
